The Minnesota Timberwolves are struggling to replicate last season’s success after trading Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks during the offseason.
Anthony Edwards is having trouble adjusting to his new roster, but his patience could run thin after getting to the Western Conference Finals just last season.
Minnesota has a golden opportunity to completely hit the reset button if Edwards requests a trade.
The San Antonio Spurs have Stephon Castle and a stockpile of draft picks they could send to the Timberwolves in any potential deal.
The Spurs have all of their own first-round picks up until 2031, the Atlanta Hawks’ first-rounders in 2025, 2026 (swap rights), and 2027, the Chicago Bulls’ 2025 top 10 protected selection, the Charlotte Hornets’ lottery-protected 2025 pick, the Toronto Raptors’ 2026 pick protected 1-6, the Boston Celtics’ 2028 pick which only protects the first pick, the Dallas Mavericks’ 2030 first-round pick, the Sacramento Kings’ 2031 first-round pick, and most importantly, Minnesota’s first-round picks in 2030 and 2031.
San Antonio has the right to swap with Minnesota in 2030 unless the Timberwolves land the first pick, but they can waive the swap rights and also return Minnesota’s 2031 first-rounder in this deal, which allows the Wolves to regain some control of their future.
The Spurs may be reluctant to part with Castle because he’s their point guard of the future, but they can send the T-Wolves at least 10 first-round picks.
The Brooklyn Nets ultimately got about 10 first-round picks for Kevin Durant in a deal that sent him to the Phoenix Suns after rerouting Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks, so the Spurs paying a similar price for Edwards is certainly not out of the question.
San Antonio could send Harrison Barnes and Zach Collins, both expiring deals in 2026, to help match salaries.
Minnesota may not be ready to give up on the Ant-Man era just yet, but if things continue to sour, the Spurs could be ready to trade a boatload of draft picks to pair Edwards with Victor Wembanyama.
