The San Antonio Spurs are making their intentions clear.
They want Victor Wembanyama to play as freely as possible.
The Spurs have now acquired two talented centers this offseason. After signing the 7-foot-1 Luke Kornet, they traded Tuesday night for sharpshooting Kelly Olynyk, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
San Antonio clearly doesn’t want Wembanyama to have to worry about playing in a traditional center role.
He’ll still block all sorts of shots, but in lineups with Kornet and Olynyk, Wemby won’t have to push around with an opposing center on the block. Instead, he’ll be able to roam and make plays with his absurd length.
Offensively, it’ll work much the same way. Wembanyama can handle the ball or go wherever he wants while a lot of the traditional center screening or hanging out under the basket can go to one of the new guys.

The Spurs have also created a backup plan in case Wemby struggles in his recovery from heart problems.
But clearly, San Antonio will be mostly planning for a healthy Wembanyama.
And right now, they could be rolling out some gigantic lineups with Wemby and the new guys.
You could probably even go Wembanyama at the 3, Olynyk at the 4 and Kornet at the 5. That sounds awesome.
