Spurs’ former 1st-round pick leaves NBA to become one of Europe’s highest-paid stars

Lonnie Walker was once one of the NBA’s most promising young players.

But at the age of 26, he’s now departing for Europe.

Walker is signing with Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv, a consistent participant in the top-tier EuroLeague. NBA insider Marc Stein reported the news and added that Walker “will be one of Europe’s highest-paid players.”

The Reading, Pennsylvania native and former Miami (FL) star played for the 76ers in 2024-25, appearing in just 20 NBA games.

Walker has spent seven seasons in the NBA since the Spurs picked him No. 18 in 2018.

He played his first four seasons for the Spurs, starting in 56 of his 208 games in San Antonio.

From there, Walker joined the Lakers for a season, the Nets for another and the 76ers for this past campaign.

In all, Walker has averaged 10.0 points per game as an NBA player along with minimal averages of 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

Walker has also been a 35.6% 3-point shooter as an NBA player.

The chance to play for Maccabi Tel Aviv is a chance for Walker to prove he can lead a top-level team. The EuroLeague is the second-best basketball stage in the world, behind the NBA.

At Walker’s age, he could still choose to return to the NBA at some point. For now, he heads overseas for his first European basketball journey.
