Spurs expected to target two former Finals MVPs if they miss out on Kevin Durant

The San Antonio Spurs have been in the market for a star to pair with Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. While they have been linked to a move for Kevin Durant, the soon-to-be 37-year-old superstar does not fit the organization’s timeline.

Meanwhile, San Antonio have shown reluctance in including 2024-25 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle or the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft in a deal with the Phoenix Suns. The Spurs have not ruled out a potential deal for Durant, however, they are reportedly waiting for Phoenix’s price to drop.

If they are unable to land the 2013-14 MVP, San Antonio reportedly could pivot to two other former Finals MVP. Brett Siegel of Clutch Points recently revealed that the Spurs could target Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown.

“Two names stand out as superstar targets for the Spurs outside of Kevin Durant: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown,” Clutch Points’ Brett Siegel wrote Tuesday. “If San Antonio holds off on pursuing Durant, these will be the two stars to keep an eye on for San Antonio moving forward.”

While Durant continues to play at an elite level, Antetokounmpo and Brown fit San Antonio’s timeline of building around Wembanyama much better. The former is 30 while the latter is 28 years old. The 2023-24 Rookie of the Year is just 21, while Fox is 27.

If the Spurs are unable to land either star, they could stay the course and opt to select Dylan Harper to add to their already impressive young core. A blockbuster deal, however, could expedite their timeline and allow San Antonio to return to contention as soon as next season.
