Spurs could upgrade lineup by pulling off blockbuster trade for Pelicans’ star forward

The San Antonio Spurs have been one of the surprise teams in the NBA this season.

With their young superstar, Victor Wembanyama, taking another step forward this season, he has helped lead the Spurs to a 17-16 record, which has them sitting ninth in the Western Conference standings. This season has been a complete turnaround since last year when they finished the season with just 22 wins.

While the Spurs’ success can be credited to Wembanyama, their veteran additions of Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes also deserve credit. Paul has been a great leader and has meshed well with San Antonio’s young lineup. Barnes has added much-needed scoring to the Spurs lineup and has also been a great leader.

Even though the Spurs are currently sitting in a playoff spot, they could still make some moves before the Feb. 6 trade deadline. They have been linked to the Sacramento Kings’ De’Aaron Fox, but they could pull off a different blockbuster move with the New Orleans Pelicans for Zion Williamson.

With the Pelicans’ season already over due to their multitude of injuries, they have been open to trading away their stars, including Zion, to add more young talent and draft capital to jumpstart their possible rebuild.

In a possible trade, the Spurs could send Keldon Johnson, Zach Collins, Tre Jones and multiple picks to New Orleans for Zion and Daniel Theis.

For the Spurs, acquiring Zion is a risk. The 2019 first-overall pick has dealt with his fair share of injuries during his six seasons in the NBA, and it has been much of the same this season.

Zion has played in only six games this season due to multiple injuries, and he has played in just 190 career games over six seasons. With his health being an issue, it would be a risky move for the Spurs, but one that could work out thanks to his dominance when he is on the court.

If the Spurs can pull off this blockbuster, Zion would give them another dominant inside scorer. His pairing alongside Wembanyama would allow him to attack the rim thanks to Wembanyama being able to stretch the floor.

Although this trade may not help the Spurs make a run at a championship this season, it would set them up for future success, especially if Zion is able to stay healthy.
