Sixers predicted to draft two-way, All-Freshman Team center to backup Joel Embiid

March Madness is underway, which means that some of college basketball’s top players will be in action. As always, this is an exciting time in the basketball world, and being on a big stage gives these young players a chance to shine. It is a chance to put NBA teams on notice, and with how this season has played out, teams will definitely be watching. There are lottery bound teams looking for players to bring in, develop and include them in their future plans. In other words, they are pieces toward their rebuild.

The Philadelphia 76ers fall into the category of lottery bound teams, and chances are, they are doing some scouting. They are likely keeping a close eye on the talent in this tournament, and come draft time, the Sixers will select their next great talent.

When it comes to the Sixers, there are a few names tied to them. Players like Cooper Flagg or Ace Bailey come to mind, but there are other prospects out there that can make an impact.

The Sixer Sense’s Jacob Moreno listed three prospects that the Sixers should keep an eye on during March Madness. One of them is Flagg’s teammate, Khaman Maluach, and throughout the season he has made a name for himself.

Maluach is a two-way center for the Duke Blue Devils. He has had a solid freshman year, as he is averaging 8.4 points and 6.8 rebounds while shooting 70.2% from the field. His performance throughout the season helped him become a member of the ACC All-Freshman Team.

Maluach is a big that can protect the rim, and does well as a roll-man. He also shows glimpses of being a shooter that can space the floor. NBA Draft on SI spoke on Maluach’s jumper and his progression in that area.

“His jumper, especially from beyond the arc, will be a swing skill for his draft stock in the modern NBA. Maluach is slowly starting to score further from the rim, but isn’t a perimeter threat by any means entering his freshman season. There’s reason for optimism with his fluidity and mechanics, but it’s hypothetical as of now.” They said.

If the Sixers bring in the 7-foot-2 center, they have someone that can be a backup for Joel Embiid. Maluach’s size and athleticism could help the Sixers bench, and could come in handy if their star center is hurt or resting. Having depth at a position is never a bad thing, and the freshman is a viable option.

Philadelphia will have a lot to think about come draft time, but if they are able to land a rising talent like Maluach, they will be in a good place.
