A former Colts role player is back on the market.
The San Francisco 49ers announced Saturday that they are releasing safety and special teamer George Odum.
Odum, 31, played 40 games in three seasons with the 49ers, recording 14 tackles, five passes defended and an interception. But, he’s always been more impactful as a special teamer, recording 36 tackles in San Francisco.
While in Indy, Odum was amongst the league’s best gunners. He was the league leader in special teams tackles in 2020 (21) and forced four fumbles in four seasons with the Colts.
Indy has had some solid special teams playmakers since Odum’s departure. Ashton Dulin has been amongst the best gunners in the league, but the unit has struggled since Odum left.
In 2024, Brian Mason’s unit ranked 28th in opponent net punt return yards (23.8), and adding a reliable tackler as a gunner could help improve that. The Colts lost linebacker and special teams ace Grant Stuard in free agency, but they can make replacing him easy by going with a familiar face in Odum.
What the Colts do—or where Odum ends up— remains to be seen, but there’s no denying a link between the two sides which could be strong enough to bring Odum back to where his NFL career began.
