Shocking Commanders trade idea lands Steelers $73 million multiple-time All-Pro defender

The Washington Commanders could look to upgrade at safety before the start of the 2025 season. Will Harris and Quan Martin are currently penciled in to be the team’s starters in the backend, and though the duo has potential, general manager Adam Peters could make a splash move to take the position to the next level.

There aren’t many high-level safeties on the free agency or trade market, but Last Word on Sports’ Anthony Palacios shockingly believes the Pittsburgh Steelers could trade superstar safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, and he lists the Commanders as a potential landing spot for the three-time All-Pro defender.

“Meanwhile, the Commanders are in the best position on offense. Quarterback Jayden Daniels has the right weapons and helps to keep the chains moving. Despite signing Jonathan Jones this year and trading for Marshon Lattimore last season, there’s still left to be done in this defensive system. Fitzpatrick is the perfect secondary piece that may bolster this unit,” Palacios wrote.

Fitzpatrick has been one of the best safeties in football since entering the league in 2019. The veteran tied for the league lead in interceptions with six in 2022 and has been a dominant force and leader for the Steelers’ defense.

Though Fitzpatrick hasn’t been playing at an All-Pro level over the last two years, Pittsburgh would be foolish to trade him. The Steelers still want to be competitive in 2025, and trading away one of their most pivotal players would be an incompetent move.

However, if the Steelers make Fitzpatrick available on the market, Washington would be an ideal landing spot. The team lost Jeremy Chinn to the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency, and adding Fitzpatrick to the secondary would be the ultimate win-now move.

The Commanders were the biggest surprise team in the NFL in 2024, making a run to the NFC Championship game. However, they must level up to compete with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025. Acquiring a perennial Pro Bowler like Fitzpatrick could take Washington over the top, though it is unlikely that he isn’t on the Steelers this year.
