The Seattle Seahawks could look to move on from quarterback Geno Smith this offseason, as the veteran has just one year left on his contract, and general manager John Schneider may not want to give him another multi-year extension.
If Seattle goes in a different direction at quarterback, Sporting News’ Vinnie Iyer believes the team could pursue soon-to-be-released New York Jets signal-caller Aaron Rodgers.
“Once the Jets cut Rodgers, don’t expect a major scrum to land his services. The Giants have more appeal than the Raiders and other openings, such as the Titans and Browns. The Seahawks are ideal, but something dramatic must happen there with Geno Smith for that to become a reality,” Iyer wrote.
The Jets are set to part ways with Rodgers after an underwhelming 5-12 season. Though New York didn’t live up to expectations last year, the 41-year-old didn’t have an awful statistical season, as Rodgers tossed 28 touchdowns to 11 interceptions with a 90.5 passer rating.
Though they released wide receiver Tyler Lockett and will also likely lose DK Metcalf, as the two-time Pro Bowl receiver requested a trade on Wednesday, the Seahawks are still playoff contenders in the NFC, and upgrading at quarterback may be their next move.
Rodgers isn’t the same player he once was, but a change of scenery in Seattle could be what he needs to play efficient football once again. If the Seahawks can add a few more playmakers along with third-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and also patch some holes on the offensive line, Rodgers could flourish in Seattle.
The future Hall of Famer also won’t cost as much to sign as other potential free-agent quarterback options due to his age and uncertain future after 2025. The Seahawks will have $32.5 million in cap space to utilize, as they saved $17 million by moving on from Lockett on Wednesday, but could have even more money before the start of free agency if they make additional roster moves.
Aaron Rodgers is clearly past his prime and likely only has a few years left in the NFL. However, the ten-time Pro Bowler still showed glimpses of excellent play in 2024, and Schneider should look to sign him if they decide to end the Geno Smith experiment this offseason.
