The San Jose Sharks stay busy today as they have just claimed defenseman Nick Leddy off waivers per insider Chris Johnston. This comes after the club bought out his contract.
For the Sharks, this is another move to provide veteran stability to their blue line and get to the cap floor for next season. They have also brought in John Klingberg and Dmitri Orlov to take up spots on the San Jose backend. These vets will fill in roster spots until the Sharks young defenseman in the pipeline are ready, an area of their loaded prospect pool that could use more work as the system is forward heavy.
The 34 year old Nick Leddy had a tough season for the Blues as he only played in 31 games, recording 1 goal and 4 assists. During his 4 year stint with the club, he touted 9 goals and 55 assists for 64 points in 211 games.
Over the course of his 15 year career, the Minnesota native has amassed 75 goals and 341 assists for 416 points in 1,042 games. The 2013 Stanley Cup Champion with the Chicago Blackhawks has produced 8 goals and 31 assists for 39 points 137 career playoff games.
For Leddy, this opportunity is a fresh start to have the chance to compete for more ice time on a Sharks blueline that is much less crowded than St. Louis and to play for a young team with no pressure of competing for a playoff spot next year.
