Shane Steichen details what Colts are looking for in quarterback competition

The Indianapolis Colts will have an intense quarterback competition taking place this offseason between a pair of former first-round picks.

While Anthony Richardson is hoping to save his career after dealing with injuries and inconsistent play during his first two seasons, Daniel Jones is looking to put a contentious tenure with the New York Giants behind him.

When speaking with reporters Tuesday ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, head coach Shane Steichen detailed what they’re looking for within the competition.

“We’re going to see how it all plays out obviously through OTAs and into training camp. Again, I said this in the spring with a few of you guys, it’s really going to come down to who’s the most consistent, will win the job. That’s going to kind of come down to. We’ll let that process play out,” Steichen said.

Consistency hasn’t really been the strong suit of either player throughout their respective careers so it will certainly make for an interesting battle.

As for Richardson, the 22-year-old quarterback could still have brighter days ahead of him as he finally got to have a true offseason to improve his game for the first time in his NFL career. Steichen is looking forward to seeing the Florida product compete.

“He’s been great. He came in yesterday. Obviously, we started today. Had a really good conversation with him yesterday for about a half hour. He’s excited to go compete,” Steichen said.

The outcome of this quarterback competition will likely have a major influence on the fate of this current regime so plenty of eyes will be glued to every practice rep taking place under center for the Colts throughout the offseason workout program.
