Series: Winnipeg Jets offseason recap

In this series, we take a look at each team and see what they’ve done over the offseason. Lastly, is the Winnipeg Jets.

Key additions: Jonathan Toews, Gustav Nyqvist, Tanner Pearson, Cole Koepke, Phil Di Giuseppe, Walker Duehr

The biggest addition of the offseason for Winnipeg is the hometown boy Jonathan Toews. The Blackhawks legend returns to the NHL for the first time since the 22-23 season and adds to the Jets center depth. It will be interesting to see how he looks given his age and length of time away from the game. Winnipeg also added a few middle 6 forwards in Gustav Nyqvist, Tanner Pearson and Cole Koepke.

Key subtractions: Nikolaj Ehlers, Rasmus Kupari, Mason Appleton, Brandon Tanev, Dominic Toninato, Dylan Coghlan

The Jets did loss a big piece of their forward core in Nikolaj Ehlers, who was this offseason’s most sought after non Mitch Marner target. They also lost a few superb depth players in Rasmus Kupari, Mason Appleton and Brandon Tanev.

Highest draft pick: Sascha Boumedienne, 28th overall

Salary cap space: $18 million

Staff: Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff will run it back with the same staff this season after a successful Presidents Trophy winning campaign last year. Next year will be head coach Scott Arniel’s second with the squad.

Other: The Jets still have an abundance of cap space available to them if they wish to pursue further moves this summer. Perhaps they use it to add a top 6 forward to replace Ehlers. Maybe they are potentially saving money for the impending Kyle Connor extension that will have to be done next summer.
