In this series, we take a look at each team and see what they’ve done over the offseason. Next up is the Washington Capitals.
Key additions: Justin Sourdif, Declan Chisholm
Washington have signed two players who appeared in NHL action at some point last season, the most notable being defenseman Declan Chisholm. Otherwise, they have mostly made AHL signings. They have got extensions done with important players such as Martin Fehervary and Anthony Beauvillier.
Key subtractions: Andrew Mangiapane, Taylor Raddysh, Lars Eller, Michael Sgarbossa, Alexander Alexeyev, Hunter Sheppard, T.J. Oshie
Washington have lost a fair bit of punch up front with players like Andrew Mangiapane, Taylor Raddysh and Lars Eller. But they are hoping the youth talent they have on the way with guys like Ryan Leonard can make up for those losses. Caps legend T.J. Oshie has retired, who missed all of last season due to injury.
Highest draft pick: Lynden Lakovic, 27th overall
Salary cap space: $4.1 million
Staff: GM Chris Patrick will bring back 2025 Jack Adams winner Spencer Carbery and his staff. Last year was Carbery’s 2nd season with the club. It was a successful one, in which they placed at the top of the eastern conference regular season standings.
Other: It is possible this 25-26 season could be the last for Washington Capitals legend Alex Ovechkin. The new all time NHL goals leader is entering the final year of his contract and speculation has mounted across the hockey world that this could be it for him. This will be a story to watch as the season develops.
