In this series, we take a look at each team and see what they’ve done over the offseason. Next up is the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Key additions: Nicolas Roy, Matias Maccelli, Michael Pezzetta, Vinni Lettieri, Travis Boyd, Henry Thrun
The Leafs received Nicolas Roy as compensation from Vegas for the signing rights of Mitch Marner. He is a forward who can play throughout the lineup in all situations, but he will likely slot into the Leafs bottom 6. Maccelli is a sneaky add from Utah, could be in for a bounce back season with a change of scenery. The Leafs also got core extensions done with forwards Matthew Knies and John Tavares.
Key subtractions: Mitch Marner, Ryan Reaves, Pontus Holmberg, Alex Nylander, Alex Steeves, Jani Hakanpaa, Matt Murray
The biggest domino of the offseason was the inevitable Leafs demise of Mitch Marner. He heads to Vegas as he looks for a fresh start. The Leafs did not lose much else of note, mostly depth players. But they do have some decisions to make still with free agents such as Max Pacioretty.
Highest draft pick: Tinus Luc Koblar, 64th overall
Salary cap space: $5.3 million
Staff: Toronto’s staff has undergone significant overhauls with President Brendan Shanahan finally on the move after yet another disappointing playoff run. The coaching regime will look similar with GM Brad Treliving bringing back Craig Berube for year 2. The Leafs have made some changes to the assistant staff with former Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde added to the fold.
Other: The Leafs may not be done making moves this summer as they continue to look to replace the production that will be missed with Mitch Marner. The Leafs are looking to add another top 6 forward and they have the cap to do it. Former Leafs forward Nazem Kadri has been heavily linked to a return to the squad via Real Kyper and Bourne.
