In this series, we take a look at each team and see what they’ve done over the offseason. Next up is the New York Rangers.
Key additions: Vladislav Gavrikov, Taylor Raddysh, Carey Terrance, Justin Dowling, Trey Fix-Wolansky, Scott Morrow, Derrick Pouliot
The Rangers added a crucial piece to their D core in Vlad Gavrikov. He will effectively replace K’Andre Miller and likely slot into a top pair role with top defenseman Adam Fox. They also added some depth to their offense with the addition of Taylor Raddysh and others.
Key subtractions: Chris Kreider, K’Andre Miller, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Arhur Kaliyev, Calvin de Haan, Zac Jones, Chad Ruhwedel, Louis Domingue
The Rangers parted with a couple long time franchise pieces in Chris Kreider and K’Andre Miller, signaling the retool that is taking place in New York as they look to return to the playoffs next year after a disappointing season.
Highest draft pick: Malcolm Spence, 42nd overall
Salary cap space: $777k
Staff: Rangers GM Chris Drury has brought in an entirely new coaching staff for next year with Mike Sullivan at the forefront. Replacing Peter Laviolette, Sullivan previously coached the Pittsburgh Penguins for 10 seasons winning 2 Stanley Cups back to back in 2016 and 2017. Former Rangers coach David Quinn, Joe Sacco, and Ty Hennes will be the assistants.
Other: The Rangers top forward Artemi Panarin is up for a contract extension. Although his future with the club appears murky as many insiders such as Elliotte Friedman have alluded to.
