Serie A giants add Liverpool star to two-man transfer shortlist

Liverpool fans are expecting some new faces to arrive at the club this summer despite Arne Slot’s low-key predictions.

Slot has been clear in his message that he will only look to bring in players that offer something fresh to his Premier League title-winning squad.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s impending move to Real Madrid means Slot is expected to bring in a new right-back to work alongside Conor Bradley.

A deal for Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong is close, but there are likely to be more exits than arrivals, as Slot reshapes his options for 2025/26.

Back up goal keeper Caoimhin Kelleher could move on, with rumoured interest in the Republic of Ireland international from five rival EPL clubs, with departure rumours swirling over Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Ibrahima Konate.

Darwin Nunez is also expected to be put up for sale by Slot following an inconsistent season under the Dutchman.

Darwin Nunez’s Liverpool contract, transfer value, key stats

Nunez has split opinion among the Reds faithful following his 2022 arrival from Benfica with just 40 goals scored across all competitions in three seasons at Anfield.

His tally for 2024/25 has been less than half compared to the previous two campaigns, with just seven goals on the board, up against 18 last season and 15 in 2022/23.

Slot is unconvinced by him, but with a contract until 2028, the Reds hierarchy will need to find a solution that fits all parties.

That will include taking a loss on their £75m [$100m] they have paid Benfica as part of the transfer so far with a new valuation set at around £45m [$65m].

There have been rumours of Benfica exploring a move to re-sign him alongside lingering links to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

However as per reports from Italian outlet Calciomercato.com, Serie A title-chasers Napoli have now reached out to Nunez’s representatives to offer a potential deal for the 25-year-old.

The Italians have highlighted free agent Jonathan David as their No.1 pick – but they face intense competition for the Canadian following his exit from Lille – but Nunez is on their radar for the above price.
