Serena Williams just bought a WNBA team and fans will love her specific role

Serena Williams is set to become a WNBA owner with a specific role perfectly tailored to her status as a fashion icon.

The Toronto Tempo — Canada’s first WNBA franchise set to begin play in 2026 — announced on Monday that Williams has joined the team’s ownership. The 23-time Grand Slam winner retired from professional tennis in 2022 following a record-breaking career that actually began in Canada where she made her professional debut in 1995.

“I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo,” said Serena Williams. “This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes — I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity.

With an estimated net worth over $340 million according to Forbes, Williams’ foray into the WNBA marks her latest business endeavor since hanging up her racket.

In addition to her endorsement deals with over a dozen brands, Williams launched a venture capital firm (Serena Ventures) and multimedia company (Nine Two Six Productions), cofounded a pain relief and skin care startup (Will Perform) and also owns a small stake in the Miami Dolphins.

While not the majority owner, Williams will have an active role and isn’t expected to simply sit in the shadows.

According to a team announcement, Williams will contribute to bringing the Tempo to life visually, play an active role in future jersey designs and will help forge unique merchandise collaborations with the team.

That’s a massive win for WNBA fans as Williams was particularly known for her fashion throughout her playing days. From her iconic white beads at the start of her career to her diamond-encrusted dress and Nike kicks at the 2022 US Open, Williams is a first-ballot Hall of Fame trend setter in the sports world.

“Serena Williams is an icon, a role model and a force for change in the world” said incoming majority Tempo owner Larry Tanenbaum. “She’s earned every bit of her incredible success with hard work, tenacity and determination in the face of countless challenges. She exemplifies the very best of what the Tempo stand for – we couldn’t be more honoured to have Serena in our court.”
