Senne Lammens reveals reason behind joining Man United

Manchester United were desperate for a new goalkeeper this summer and despite links with several players, the Red Devils struggled to get the deal over the line.

Ultimately, they signed Belgian youngster Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for a £18.2m ($24.4m) transfer fee plus add-ons.

The young goalkeeper was linked with a move to Old Trafford for the majority of the last couple of weeks and eventually the deal got over the line on deadline day.

It would have been a major issue had they not signed a new goalkeeper given Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir’s performances this season across competitions.

Untied were also linked with Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez but on deadline day they decided to trust the 23-year-old to fill the void between the sticks.

The Belgian has signed a five-year contract with United and is expected to instantly become their No. 1 option given the competition in his position at Old Trafford.

What did Senne Lammens say after completing his move to Manchester United?

Lammens had interest from several clubs across Europe after his exceptional 2024/25 campaign for Royal Antwerp, but he decided to move to Old Trafford mainly sensing his chances to secure more minutes.

“I am extremely proud to be joining Manchester United, it is a real dream come true,” Lammens told the Man United media team. “The past few years have been an amazing journey, it’s now ended in an incredible destination and hopefully the beginning of something special.

“You can feel the positive atmosphere that is being created here, and I know that I can make a real impact at the club in the coming years.

“I cannot wait to get to know my teammates and begin working with Ruben and the coaching staff. This is the perfect place to keep developing, grow together with this exciting team and achieve my career objectives.”

Lammens is extremely highly rated at Antwerp where he moved from Club Brugge in 2023 and after featuring in Antwerp’s youth team, he broke through the senior team in the 2023/24 season.

He was part of the Antwerp team that won the Belgian Super Cup in 2023 and in 2024/25 season, he was simply outstanding registering 10 clean sheets in 44 appearances with a 73% save accuracy and 2.75 saves per 90 minutes.

However, it will be interesting to see how the young Belgian performs given the pressure and the scrutiny that comes with representing a new team like Manchester United.
