Chelsea slumped to a 2-0 Premier League defeat at the hands of rivals Newcastle United on May 11 in a result which has dented their chances of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The loss to Eddie Howe’s side means Chelsea now have two league games left this season, against Manchester United on May 16, and then at Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season on May 25.
Ideally, Chelsea need to win both matches to secure that all-important UCL place.
Despite sitting in fifth place in the EPL table – and preparing for a Conference League final – Maresca finds himself under pressure going into the final fortnight.
According to a report by TeamTalk, Maresca could be sacked if Chelsea fail to qualify for the UCL, regardless of his overall performance.
There are apparently doubts about the Italian behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge, and whether Chelsea qualify for the Champions League and win the Conference League, will be crucial in determining his future.

The report goes on to state that some members of the Chelsea board believe Maresca’s football style – based on slow possession and building out progressively from the back – is not ideal for the pace and physical demands of the Premier League. They are also worried about the team’s inconsistency and lack of identity.
While some members want to continue with Maresca as manager, not everyone is of the same opinion. No final decision has been made on the matter at this stage, but it is believed he is no longer considered untouchable by the decision makers at Chelsea.
The next few weeks will be decisive for Maresca at Chelsea. The results and performances from his players will determine whether he stays on to lead the club’s long-term plan, or if a change is made sooner than expected. A final decision will be made at the season’s end.
