The Seattle Seahawks’ 2025 offseason got a lot more interesting on Wednesday after it was reported that wide receiver DK Metcalf has requested a trade, something the Seahawks will apparently try to oblige.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Metcalf’s request stems from his desire to join a contending team. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero adds that Seattle has “agreed to explore options.”
But what will the Seahawks be looking for in exchange?
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports that it’s going to be substantial. Seattle wants a first- and third-round pick for Metcalf, who is also seeking a new contract that pays him around $30 million annually. Multiple teams have already inquired about the former second-round pick, Russini adds.
Even though Metcalf is only 27 and clearly a supremely talented player, Seattle is going to have a hard time getting that package for Metcalf without sending the acquiring team something back.
After all, Metcalf is on the final year of his deal in 2025, will require a hefty financial commitment on top of the draft capital it’ll take to secure him, and he’s coming off a down year that saw his lowest yardage output since 2021.
Before Metcalf’s trade request was made public, Corbin K. Smith of Emerald City Spectrum revealed that the Green Bay Packers had an offer on the table that included a high pick and a young receiver. That’s more along the lines of what we can expect the Seahawks to get in return for Metcalf.
Of course, trading Metcalf is going to leave a gaping hole in the Seahawks’ wide receivers room. The team has also released fellow wideout Tyler Lockett, leaving Jaxon Smith-Njigba and not much else.
We wouldn’t be shocked to see the Seahawks work hard to get a receiver back in a trade for their star player.
