The Sentry is the calendar-year opening tournament for the 2025 PGA Tour season. However, the No. 1 golfer in the world will not be in attendance.
The PGA Tour announced on Friday that Scottie Scheffler will not be attending the competition in Hawaii due to a hand injury he suffered while making preparations for Christmas dinner.
Scheffler is coming off an incredible 2024 season. The Texas native won seven times on the tour, including his second Masters victory, his first Tour Championship, The Players, and four other signature events. He also won his first Olympic gold medal, placing first at the competition in Paris.

There are a number of people all over the world that suffer injuries while cooking, and it turns out, the 2-time major champion is not exempt from that.

“On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass,” Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, said in a statement. “Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery.
“… Unfortunately he will have to withdraw from The Sentry.”
Scheffler will miss the action at the Kapalua Plantation Course in Maui, Hawaii. The Sentry was one of 16 tournaments in which Scheffler finished in the top-10 in 2024. He ended up tied for 5th at last year’s event after shooting 25-under par.
When will Scottie Scheffler return?
After undergoing surgery, Scheffler is expected to only be out for a few weeks. It is anticipated that it will take three-to-four weeks before he is back to “100%.”
According to his manager, the 28-year-old is scheduled to return to action at The American Express, a tournament set for Jan. 16 in La Quinta, Calif. Given the timeline for his recovery, it is unlikely he will be back to full health for The American Express competition, but he may play through the injury.
