March represents the dog days of the NBA season, a month where relative unknowns can become supernovas — at least for a fleeting moment.
On March 17, Quentin Grimes dropped a career-high 46 points, leading the bruised and bandaged 76ers to a stunning win over the second-place Rockets.
On Wednesday, Spurs big Sandro Mamukelashvili did him one better, etching his name into NBA history with a stat line unlike any in the league’s record books. His showcase propelled San Antonio to an eye-catching 120-105 win over the Knicks, the third-seed in the Eastern Conference.
Here’s what you need to know.

Mamukelashvili has taken on an increased role in San Antonio’s rotation since Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the remainder of the season with deep vein thrombosis. On Wednesday, he conjured up a career showing, making a bit of NBA history in the process.
The 25-year old put forth a Wembanyama-like performance, accounting for 34 points, nine rebounds and three assists in just 19 minutes of game time.
With his outburst, Mamukelashvili became the first player in league history with at least 34 points and five rebounds in fewer than 20 minutes.
Mamukelashvili got his numbers in a variety of ways. At times, the 6-9 southpaw showed off his jumper, whetting the nylon on all seven of his three-point attempts.
When that wasn’t available, Mammukelashvili slalomed towards the rack, using his formidable 240-pound frame to outmuscle opposition defenders.
All that amounted to a career day at Frost Bank Center. It’s one that Mamukelashvili won’t soon forget.
