Saints can trade for Giants’ $1 million backup to be Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough’s understudy

The New Orleans Saints are the only NFL team that hasn’t named a starting quarterback ahead of the 2025 season. That’s not a good sign for Spencer Rattler, rookie Tyler Shough, or Jake Haener.

Mickey Loomis likely won’t be swinging for the fences in a trade for more competition in the room. Not with 2026 NFL draft prospects like LSU Tigers QB Garrett Nussmeier and Texas Longhorns QB Arch Manning having ties to the franchise and the area.

But a trade for depth isn’t out of the question if the front office decides to offload Haener before Tuesday’s 4 P.M.

Sports Illustrated’s Patricia Traina believes the Saints could be a landing spot for New York Giants fourth-stringer Tommy DeVito. Traina sees a similar situation for DeVito in New Orleans behind Rattler and/or Shough that he’s been in with Daniel Jones in the Big Apple.

“Eventually, the Saints are looking to start rookie Tyler Shough as their franchise quarterback, but it looks as though they’re going to roll with Spencer Rattler in the interim. Their only other quarterback on their depth chart is Jake Haener, who, of the three Saints signal callers, had the worst completion percentage (61.1%) in his limited snaps,” Traina wrote.

“Just as the Giants sought to take it slow with Jaxson Dart’s development, if the Saints were to acquire DeVito, he could serve in a similar role, in which he’d give New Orleans a fallback plan should Rattler, who looks like he might be named the starter, struggle, and should Shough not be ready for the bright lights.”

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan sees DeVito as a likely roster casualty in New York if he isn’t traded.

“Tommy DeVito’s audition for the rest of the league saw him impress: He completed 15 of his first 17 passes while throwing a touchdown on each of his first three drives. Still, he is likely the odd man out in the QB room,” Raanan wrote.

Perhaps Loomis and Co. don’t have to give up anything in a trade if Joe Schoen outright cuts DeVito.

DeVito only plays in either city if something goes wrong, but he’ll always be behind Jaxson Dart on the Giants. The Saints don’t have a definitive QB1. Anyone can win Kellen Moore’s competition if given the chance right now.

DeVito included.
