As the FedEx Cup Playoffs head to Maryland for the BMW Championship, the top 50 players remaining are also looking to improve their Ryder Cup standings.
Last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship helped some players punch their ticket to the Ryder Cup, as Justin Rose, J.J. Spaun, and Tommy Fleetwood all benefited from a strong weekend. On the other side, some players failed to take advantage of the opportunity with little time remaining before teams are finalized.
Ryder Cup standings for Team USA will be locked in after the BMW Championship concludes on Sunday, with the top six golfers automatically qualifying for the event. Team Europe, meanwhile, will get an extra week as its standings lock after the British Masters concludes on Aug. 24.
Still, just because golfers may not be near the top six doesn’t mean they can’t improve their standings. Here’s a look at the Ryder Cup standings ahead of the BMW Championship this weekend.

Three players on Team USA have now qualified for the Ryder Cup, as J.J. Spaun and Xander Schauffele join Scottie Scheffler as locks to make the team. The other three players currently in the top six are Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau, and Harris English, who should all make the team even if they don’t automatically qualify.
Just outside of the top six are Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, and Ben Griffin, who all seem to have pretty safe spots. Thomas and Morikawa are Ryder Cup veterans, while Griffin’s breakout seasons should allow him to make his first Ryder Cup.
The final three spots on the team still appear to be in flux, with all the focus on Keegan Bradley. The Team USA captain is currently ranked No. 10 thanks to a strong season, but has faded lately, failing to finish higher than 30 in the four tournaments since his win at the Travelers Championship.
The last members of the team will likely come between the golfers ranked Nos. 10 to 21. Patrick Cantlay hasn’t had his best season, but his experience and success in the Ryder Cup still probably earn him a spot.
Cameron Young and Chris Gotterup are also interesting options, as both have had strong performances in the past few months. Young’s win two weeks ago at the Wyndham Championship may have put him on the team, potentially jumping Gotterup.
Maverick McNealy, Andrew Novak, Sam Burns, and Brian Harman all likely need strong showings at the BMW Championship this weekend to secure a spot. Â

The European Ryder Cup team seems much more stable than Team USA’s.
Rory McIlroy clinched a spot on the team months ago, but Justin Rose joined him with a huge win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday. Tommy Fleetwood may have lost to Rose over the weekend, but he did clinch his own spot, as well.
The other three spots in the top six are currently occupied by Robert MacIntyre, Tyrell Hatton, and Sepp Straka, but that will likely change. Hatton’s status on the LIV Tour means he is done earning points, and Straka had to withdraw from the BMW Championship for a personal matter, so Shane Lowry could jump one or both this weekend. Nonetheless, all three will be on the team come September.
Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland are ranked Nos. 9 and 10, and both will make the team after being key parts of Europe’s 2023 win. Jon Rahm is all the way down at No. 22, but it’s hard to imagine Luke Donald won’t pick him either.
That leaves two spots remaining. Rasmus Hojgaard is in a good position with his No. 8 ranking, but he has never played in a Ryder Cup and could be left off in favor of someone else like his brother, Nicolai. Matt Fitzpatrick has found his game over the last month, which could make Matt Wallace the odd man out.
