Rory McIlroy celebration: Masters winner overcome with emotion after ending 11-year major drought

After an 11-year major drought, Rory McIlroy was overcome with emotion when he finally captured the Masters on Sunday.

When McIlroy sank his final putt on the first and only playoff hole, the Northern Irishman tossed his putter in the air and dropped to his knees with pure joy as the crowd at Augusta National roared. CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz called his reaction “the most authentic thing any of us have ever seen.”

McIlroy had not won a major since his victory at the Open Championship in 2014, and this was his first triumph at the Masters, the tournament that has eluded him for his entire career. Earning a green jacket solidifies McIlroy as a golf legend, as he has now accomplished a career Grand Slam by winning the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and Open Championship.

Rory McIlroy’s emotional celebration after Masters win

One of the best celebration moments came courtesy of McIlroy’s friend Shane Lowry. The two were amateur players growing up together and have remained close since joining the PGA Tour. Lowry hugged McIlroy after he sank the final putt.

Another glorious embrace came between McIlroy and his family as he was walking to the clubhouse. His wife, Erica Stoll, and daughter, Poppy, were there to greet him as tears rolled down his face. It was one of the most heartwarming things you’ll ever see on a golf course.

McIlroy celebrated with friends and family, and then remembered his most important remaining task, he needed to go get his green jacket.

After thanking his parents for all of their love and support during his interview inside Butler Cabin, McIlroy donned his green jacket. Last year’s Masters champion, Scottie Scheffler, did the honors as the patrons at Augusta roared again.

McIlroy is from Holyood, County Down, Northern Ireland. Even though there is a five-hour time difference and the end of the Masters would have come right around midnight, locals still had a watch party and celebrated with McIlroy from across the pond.
