Roman Empire sinks Bronx Bombers in key American League tilt Thursday

The Red Sox got exactly what they needed in the Bronx, and it came from a 21-year-old rookie making his first appearance at Yankee Stadium. Roman Anthony drilled a two-run shot in the ninth inning and finished with three RBIs, lifting Boston to a 6-3 win over the Yankees on Thursday night.

Anthony shines in Yankee Stadium debut

Anthony had already singled in a run earlier, but his blast off Yerry De Los Santos sealed the deal after Paul Goldschmidt’s error opened the door. Anthony didn’t hide his excitement either, giving a bat flip before circling the bases in front of a stunned New York crowd.

“It was unreal. The atmosphere here is crazy,” Anthony said after the game.

He became the fourth Boston rookie this year to homer against the Yankees, joining Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell, and Carlos Narvaez. That’s the most by Red Sox rookies in a season against New York since 2014.

Boston snaps skid in rivalry clash

Nathaniel Lowe put Boston ahead earlier with an RBI double in the seventh, but the Sox nearly wasted chances all night, going just 3-for-19 with runners in scoring position. Even with those struggles, the late swing from Anthony was enough to snap a three-game slide and pull the Red Sox within a game of the Yankees for the AL’s top wild-card slot.

The win also pushed Boston’s streak against New York to six straight, their longest run over the Yankees since 2023.

Veteran Alex Bregman praised the rookie’s composure after another clutch performance. “He’s probably the most polished 21-year-old I’ve ever been around. Nothing seems too big for him,” Bregman said.

Yankees’ win streak ends

New York had been rolling with five straight wins but slipped back after committing four errors. Ben Rice homered and Goldschmidt drove in a run, but the Yankees’ bats couldn’t solve Boston’s bullpen.

After starter Lucas Giolito gave Boston 4.2 innings, five relievers combined to shut New York out the rest of the way. Greg Weissert earned the win with 1.1 scoreless innings.

Yankees starter Luis Gil lasted five innings, allowing two runs on four hits but walking five in just his fourth start since returning from injury.
