Roman Anthony crushes 497-foot home run: How monster grand slam shows Red Sox top prospect has elite power

The “Roman Empire” will arrive in the big leagues soon, but in the meantime, he’s tearing the cover off the ball in Triple-A.

Red Sox top prospect Roman Anthony demolished a 497-foot grand slam on Saturday night to give the Worcester Red Sox an 8-5 lead in the bottom of the 8th. It is the longest home run in baseball this season and would be the 5th-longest major league home run of the Statcast era.

Anthony was drafted by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. In less than three minor league seasons, he’s become the top prospect in baseball.

Anthony is batting .290 with a .421 on-base percentage, .495 slugging percentage, .916 OPS and 10 home runs in 57 games in the minors this season. He’s expected to be called up to Boston soon.

Roman Anthony’s 497-foot home run

Anthony connected on a 91.1 mph sinker from Rochester Red Wings pitcher Carlos Romero and deposited it over the right-center field wall. The ball traveled 115.6 mph.

Anthony’s home run was the longest of the baseball season, majors or minors. Angels outfielder Mike Trout has the longest homer in MLB (484 feet) and Diamondbacks prospect Aramis Garcia (484 feet) previously had the longest minor league homer.

Roman Anthony stats

Anthony has been torching Triple A pitching this year, and his power and plate discipline have been on full display. He’s hit 10 home runs in 57 games while also drawing 49 walks. Teams may have some reservations about pitching to him after his mammoth home run on Saturday.

Here’s a look at Anthony’s stat line this year.

G AB R H HR RBI BB SO AVG OBP SLG OPS
57 210 44 61 10 29 49 55 .290 .421 .495 .916

Roman Anthony age

Anthony is 21 years old and already playing in Triple A, after he was drafted out of high school in 2022. He’s gone through four levels of the minor leagues in less than three seasons. When he’s called up this season, he will be the youngest player on Boston’s roster.

When will Roman Anthony be called up?

Anthony is expected to be called up to the big leagues at some point in June. Given his performance in Triple A — and the fact that the Red Sox are four games below .500 and sitting in fourth place in the AL East — he could certainly provide an offensive spark for the major league club.

Red Sox outfielder depth chart

The Red Sox have three clear-cut starters in the outfield, including 2024 All-Star Jarren Duran and defensive stalwart Ceddanne Rafaela. Anthony, who plays all three outfield positions, would likely split time with Wilyer Abreu in right field. If the Red Sox are out of contention at the trade deadline, one of their outfielders could be moved to create more playing time for baseball’s top prospect.

Here’s a look at Boston’s outfield depth chart.

1. Jarren Duran
2. Ceddanne Rafaela
3. Wilyer Abreu
4. Rob Refsnyder
5. Kristian Campbell
6. Romy Gonzalez
