Rockies cut ties with former 1st-round pick in surprise decision

The Colorado Rockies aren’t really in a position to be getting rid of talented baseball players.

But they must’ve decided Keston Hiura wasn’t good enough, even for them.

On Monday, the Rockies designated Hiura for assignment just 17 days after acquiring him.

Hiura was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 draft by the Brewers.

He had most recently played in MLB for the Angels before joining the Rockies on May 31.

With Colorado, Hiura went 4-for-18 with a double while getting time at first base.

Hiura had taken over for Michael Toglia, who was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move after Hiura’s DFA.

Now, Hiura goes on waivers, where another team could choose to claim him. If no one does, he could end up in Triple-A.

Hiura was a star as a 22-year old rookie for the Brewers in 2019, hitting .303 with 19 homers.

Since then, though, he has batted just .203 in 669 at bats across five seasons with strikeouts in more than a third of his at bats.

It seems like a case of a lost cause with Hiura. But someone out there will probably keep him around in their minor league system, just in case he discovers his swing once again.
