Rockets face $122 million decision following blockbuster Kevin Durant trade

The Houston Rockets made a bold move toward title contention this summer, acquiring 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant in a historic seven-team trade.

Houston notably gave up Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and several second-round picks for the aging superstar. Now, the team must decide if extending Durant is worth it as he enters the final year of his contract.

Durant is eligible for a two-year, $122.1 million extension with the Rockets. However, the team may hesitate to offer him the max, according to Kurt Helin of NBC Sports.

“One source who spoke to NBC Sports during Summer League suggested KD might dip to about the $100 million mark for two years, around $10 million a season below the max but still $50 million a season,” he wrote.

Durant is in the twilight of his career and aims to compete for his third NBA championship with a rising Rockets team. The squad boasts a strong mix of youth and veterans, finishing as the second seed in a stacked Western Conference during the 2024-25 campaign.

With promising young players like Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr. and Reed Sheppard alongside veterans Durant, Fred VanVleet, Steven Adams and Dorian Finney-Smith, the Rockets have the tools to win now while building toward the future.

Houston isn’t required to make an immediate decision on Durant’s extension, but his future with the team will be a key storyline after the significant haul the Rockets gave up to acquire him.
