Rickie Fowler appears to be heating up at just the right time.
After a confidence-boosting showing at the John Deere Classic, where he finished tied for 18th, Fowler is shifting focus to the season’s final major, The Open Championship. That result marked a timely surge for the veteran, who is seeking his elusive first major title.
Instead of taking part in the traditional warm-up at the Scottish Open, Fowler opted to compete in Illinois. He explained his late-July schedule was still flexible depending on how things unfolded over the last few weeks. Among his considerations are the 3M Open and the Wyndham Championship—tournaments that could help secure his standing in the FedEx Cup. Right now, he’s on track to qualify for the playoffs, but his spot is anything but guaranteed.

The Open Championship, set for July 17–20 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, presents a crucial opportunity for Fowler to boost both his season and his FedEx Cup position.
Hoping for a Throwback Performance
It’s been nearly two years since Fowler last hoisted a trophy—his most recent win came in July 2023 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Since then, his form has seen ups and downs. However, his top-20 finish last week and a strong run earlier in the year at the Cognizant Classic indicate he’s trending in the right direction.
Fowler has a rich history at The Open, having competed 12 times and earning three top-10 finishes. His closest brush with victory came in 2014 when he finished second. The return to links golf could be just the spark he needs.
Now, Fowler travels across the Atlantic with renewed momentum and plenty to play for. Whether this is the moment he reclaims center stage remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt he’s heading to Portrush with purpose.
