What is a golden goal?

In sports, a golden goal is a term that refers to the next goal scored winning the game. It typically comes in soccer or hockey and when overtime is needed to determine a winner.

During the 2010 Olympics, the USA and Canada were tied at the end of regulation in the gold medal game. This meant that if a goal was scored in the overtime period, it would win the game for whichever team scored it. Crosby netted one with 12:20 left in the overtime period.
