The Boston Red Sox lost Triston Casas to a season-ending knee injury last month. He is now in the recovery process and revealed when he hopes to be back on the field.
Casas told WEEI’s Rob Bradford that he hopes to return by the start of next season. He ruptured his left patellar tendon and underwent surgery at the beginning of May.
“‘I’m living my worst nightmare right now.’ – Triston Casas,” Bradford wrote on X. “Said target is to be ready for Opening Day.”
Casas came into the season with high expectations. While his name was being floated in trade rumors, Craig Breslow revealed that the team views Casas as a player capable of a 40-home run, 120-RBI season, according to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.
“I think that is the expectation for the first baseman of the Boston Red Sox,” Casas said of Breslow’s confidence in him. “I think if I’m not able to do that, then I don’t deserve a job here. I don’t feel that’s out of my reach. I feel like that’s something that’s very possible for me to accomplish.”

Unfortunately, Casas will not have a chance to prove Breslow right this year. He was off to a slow start, hitting just .182 with three home runs. He had plenty of time to turn things around, but will now have to wait until 2026.
His absence has left the team with a question mark at first base. The team is reportedly still having conversations about Rafael Devers playing first base. They have also been working Kristian Campbell out at first base. A trade for a first baseman is not off the table either.
