The Boston Red Sox got swept by the Milwaukee Brewers, getting walked off in the final two games. On Wednesday, Brayan Bello was pulled after just 77 pitches.
The Red Sox had a bullpen game on Tuesday night, essentially. Richard Fitts went just three innings and the bullpen was put to work in an extra-inning game. Getting length out of Bello would have been huge, but he went just 4 2/3 innings. He spoke on being pulled after the game.
“I feel a little bit frustrated that I was taken out of the game with 77 pitches. I felt like I had a little more in the tank, but at the same time it’s their decision and you have to respect that,” Bello said through an interpreter.
Bello has not given the Red Sox five full innings in his last five starts. In his previous four starts, his pitch counts were hovering around 90 when he was pulled. However, Alex Cora made the decision to pull Bello early with Christian Yelich coming up to hit.
Bello exited the game with a 3-2 lead with Brice Turang standing at third base. The Red Sox ended up losing the lead in the sixth inning before evening the score in the seventh inning. The game went into extra innings, further taxing the Red Sox’s bullpen. The team ended up using four relievers in the loss.

Bello has a 4.08 ERA this season through seven starts. He, and seemingly every Red Sox starter not named Garrett Crochet, have been struggling to go deep into games or give the Red Sox a chance to win. After being swept by the Brewers, the team is now 27-31, nine games back of the New York Yankees in the American League East.
