Red Sox Trevor Story breaks silence on being replaced by Marcelo Mayer

The Boston Red Sox haven’t been shy about making changes as they seek a return to the playoffs.

This past offseason, the team shook up its pitching staff, replacing Nick Pivetta and James Paxton with Walker Buehler and Garrett Crochet. It swapped Aroldis Chapman into the bullpen for Kenley Jansen. And it pushed Rafael Devers into a designated hitter role to make room for Alex Bregman.

And now, as a veteran shortstop Trevor Story struggles, the Red Sox could be eyeing a top prospect replacement in Marcelo Mayer.

“Story is 32 and has missed far more games than he has played since signing with the Red Sox before the 2022 season,” as Peter Abraham wrote for The Boston Globe. “Injuries changed the course of his career and now it’s fair to wonder if the Sox would be a better team with Marcelo Mayer playing shortstop.”

After earning two All-Star nods and two Silver Slugger Awards in his time with the Colorado Rockies, Story has failed to recapture that success since joining the Red Sox in 2022. He has been unable to log 100 games in any season in Boston and has played in fewer than 50 in each of the past three years.

Story has had some good moments in 2025, but so far he’s slashing just .252/.291/.371 with 45 strikeouts and 36 hits.

Meanwhile, Mayer is a member of the organization’s “big three” of highly-touted prospects and fans are calling for him to get a look on the big-league roster. Of course, that would mean Story taking a backseat.

When asked about the idea of being replaced by Mayer, Story broke his silence on the idea with a positive outlook.

“It doesn’t bother me,” Story said, per Abraham. “I think Marcelo is a great player. It’s up to the front office to find ways to make it work. I’ve always said it’s never bad having too many good players.”
