After a turbulent offseason following the signing of third baseman Alex Bregman, the Boston Red Sox have traded All-Star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster deal.
When the Red Sox signed Bregman this offseason, there were questions about who the team’s starting third baseman would be on Opening Day. Bregman won the starting spot, relegating Devers to being Boston’s everyday designated hitter.
Devers made his desire to play third base and nothing else clear from the beginning. Tensions rose as the Red Sox kept him off the field despite Bregman’s recent injury and even asked him to play first base after Triston Casas got injured.
In a surprise trade, the Red Sox are sending Devers to the Giants in a blockbuster deal, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray.
“The San Francisco Giants are acquiring Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox for Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison and more, according to sources familiar with the deal,” Murray reported.

Devers is in the second year of a ten-year, $313 million contract extension, which he signed in January 2023, according to Spotrac. Despite having a good season at the plate right now, slashing .272/.401/.905 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs, the frustration between Devers and team leadership grew to a boiling point.
Boston acquired right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison and other players in the packaged for Devers. This shocking move will have massive implications for the Red Sox as they pursue the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
