The Boston Red Sox weren’t able to pull through last night on Payton Tolle’s second start in the MLB, where he gave up five runs in three innings. His team still believes in him though, and made sure to vocalize it.
One of those teammates was Sox superstar Alex Bregman, who said he thinks Tolle will have a great career, and is looking forward to every start of his.

“I think he’s going to have a hell of a career. … He wouldn’t be making that start if we didn’t believe in him. We believe he gives us a great chance to win every time he steps out there. I look forward to the next one and many more after that,” Bregman said.
Through his first two starts, Tolle has pitched 8.1 innings, and now has a 7.56 ERA with 10 strikeouts. His debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates was electric, where he went 5.1 innings and struck out eight batters, and then got two earned runs from a reliever allowing the men Tolle left on base to score.

Tolle has shown that he can perform at the Major League level, but he’s also shown he’s going to have growing pains as almost all rookies have. As long as he settles in over the next couple starts, the Sox will be fine. And if he doesn’t, he’ll have a whole offseason to train, learn and grow to be ready for the 2026 season.
Hopefully the former happens, as the Sox can use all the help they can get while pushing to their first playoff appearance since 2021.
