The Boston Red Sox’ Big Three of rookies Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell were set to make waves this season, but now all of them are out of the spotlight. Anthony and Mayer are down with injury, and Campbell is back down in AAA.
Campbell has spent a majority of the season in AAA, playing second base, and learning and playing a majority at first base, but now he’s re-learning a new spot. According to the Worcester Red Sox’ lineup card yesterday, Campbell will be playing right field now too.

According to Sox insider Andrew Parker, this is the first time Campbell has started at right field since 2023, when he was in the FCL, or the Florida Complex League. In other words, rookie ball.
In the minors, Campbell has slashed .272/.385/.431/.816 with nine doubles and eight home runs over 63 games. He’s also played six positions now in AAA, including first base, second base, DH, left field, center field, and now right field.

It seems the Red Sox are trying to make Campbell a utility player, and are preparing him for the role next year. As of now, they have three in Romy Gonzalez, David Hamilton, and Rob Refsnyder. However, Refsnyder is close to retirement, and Hamilton doesn’t offer much other than baserunning and stealing.
With that in mind, and the fact Hamilton is a middle infielder and Refsnyder an outfielder, it seems the Sox are looking at Kristian Campbell to be the solution. Hopefully he is, but also hopefully he gets to be a starter at a position most of the time, and just has the ability to go elsewhere, as he deserves it.
