Red Sox risky move could land three-time All-Star after Triston Casas injury

It was a scary sight at Fenway Park when Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas was carted off the field in the bottom of the second inning with a knee injury.

Casas has been slumping early this season, slashing .182/.277/.580 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 29 games. There were rumors about whether the Red Sox would shake things up at first base before Casas’ injury, but now the team needs a first baseman.

Athlon Sports’ Jake Elman proposed that the Red Sox make a risky acquisition and sign a three-time All-Star free agent first baseman in Anthony Rizzo.

“Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas suffered a significant left knee injury during Friday’s 6-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins,” Elman wrote. “Casas fell near first base in the second inning and soon left the field on a stretcher. Boston manager Alex Cora called the injury ‘significant’ and said Casas went to a local hospital for testing.”

“Could Casas’ injury open a spot for Rizzo, a career .261 hitter with 303 home runs, a .828 OPS, and 40.4 bWAR in 14 seasons? Rizzo hasn’t signed anywhere, not even on a minor-league deal, since the New York Yankees declined his 2025 club option. The three-time All-Star turns 36 in August and struggled throughout the 2024 campaign, managing just eight home runs and a .637 OPS across 92 games.”

In addition to being a three-time All-Star, Rizzo is also a four-time Gold Glove winner. Rizzo may not have had a great season last year with the Yankees, but the 35-year-old could still be a valuable asset for the Red Sox. It would be a risky signing, but there could be upside if Casas is out for a significant amount of time.
