The Boston Red Sox have already added a top-of-the-rotation piece this offseason, acquiring left-handed starter Garrett Crochet for a package of four prospects from the Chicago White Sox.
However, they’re still looking for more pieces to build a rotation that can bring them to the postseason for the first time since 2021.
While Boston could just spend the money in free agency and sign Corbin Burnes, they could also use some of their young talent and prospects to acquire another budding star in a trade.
In a recent piece for Newsweek, Zach Pressnell proposed that the Red Sox make a trade with the Seattle Mariners to land right-handed starter Bryan Woo. In his proposed deal, Seattle would receive first baseman Triston Casas and prospects Allan Castro and Luis Guerrero.
“Seattle needs an infielder and the Red Sox could afford to move first baseman Triston Casas,” Pressnell wrote. “The Mariners would reportedly prefer to trade Luis Castillo if they’re going to move a pitcher, but starter Bryan Woo would make more sense for the Red Sox.”
Woo, 24, had a great 2024 season, his second in the MLB. In 22 starts for the Mariners, he posted a 2.89 ERA, 0.898 WHIP and 7.5 K/9 over 121 1/3 innings. If the Red Sox are really concerned with shelling out money to pitchers, the fact that Woo is still in pre-arbitration should make him more enticing.
It would stink to give up Casas, who could be one of the best first basemen in the league when healthy, but he has dealt with injury problems frequently in his young career. And, with Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hitting the market next year, they could get an upgrade at the position after just one year.
