The Boston Red Sox have really come into their own this season, and it’s mostly thanks to their new blood. The Big Three; Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer all made their rookie debuts this season, and all three have been or were contributing. However, it might just be Anthony for the rest of this season.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora was interviewed by the Boston Herald’s Mac Cerullo, where he revealed what’s going on for Campbell and Mayer. Campbell is thriving in AAA, but it doesn’t seem like Cora thinks he’s ready to come back to The Show.
“I’ve been watching at bats, and he’s producing, but there is still work to do down there,” Cora said.

When pressed on what he needs to work on, Cora revealed it’s still his normal struggles.
“The same things he struggled here with, pitch recognition, covering certain shapes of fastballs, and it’s hard because he’s not going to get that down there, he’s not. The velo here is harder, it’s faster, locations are on point here, with all due respect to the players down there, it’s a big gap,” Cora said. “It’s just one of those where we’ve got to keep working and he has to keep working and we’ll see what the future holds.”

As for Mayer, he had shown promising results recently, but Cora still thinks he may not be ready, according to Cerullo.
“Marcelo Mayer (sprained right wrist) has begun taking dry swings, but Cora said they still aren’t sure whether he’ll be able to return this season,” Cerullo wrote.
So, it seems like Campbell won’t be seen in the Majors until 2026, and Mayer is 50/50. Hopefully he returns, as the Sox can use all the help they can get with their 2025 playoff push.
