Red Sox make Rafael Devers announcement on first base after Triston Casas terrible injury

The Boston Red Sox need a new first baseman.

Triston Casas went down with a nasty knee injury on Friday night, and on Saturday, manager Alex Cora announced that he had ruptured his left patellar tendon.

There’s already been plenty of speculation on who will take over the spot.

Cora wanted to make one thing clear when asked on Saturday: It won’t be Rafael Devers.

Devers has spent the season at DH after losing his third base job to offseason signing Alex Bregman.

There isn’t a history of Devers at first, but some wondered whether it’d be a way to get him back in the field, which he’d potentially enjoy.

First base isn’t as easy as some make it out to be, at least for someone who has never played there at the MLB level.

The Red Sox chose Saturday to start Romy Gonzalez at first base in the first game without Casas. Gonzalez can play all over the infield and has hit solidly so far this season.

This could lead to a trade down the road if Boston is in contention and feels it hasn’t gotten the production it wants from the first base spot.

But for now, Devers is staying a hitter only and Gonzalez is the first baseman in Boston.
