The Boston Red Sox have high expectations heading into the 2025 Major League Baseball season.
After finishing third in the division with an 81-81 record in 2024, the Red Sox have been active in the offseason, improving the team. Boston traded for southpaw ace pitcher Garrett Crochet and signed All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, eyeing a playoff run in 2025.
Despite bringing in these two All-Stars, Boston may be getting a major upgrade in the field, with one of their top prospects making it to the big leagues. According to a report from Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 in Houston that was later confirmed by MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, 22-year-old second base prospect Kristian Campbell was informed that he had made the Red Sox’s Opening Day roster.
Campbell is the No.2 prospect for the Red Sox and No.7 overall in the league, according to MLB Pipeline. There was an opening at second base for Campbell, with Boston set to start Bregman at third, and though Campbell struggled in spring training, it seems to have been enough.
Campbell slashed .330/.439/.558 across the minor leagues last season, with 20 home runs and 24 stolen bases across 115 games. The 22-year-old rose through the minor leagues quickly after being drafted in the fourth round in 2023. He’s a versatile right-handed hitter who can field multiple positions if needed.
There has not been an official announcement about whether Campbell will be the Red Sox’s starting second baseman, but either way, it is promising to see one of the team’s top prospects ready to make his major league debut.
