Red Sox make injury updates regarding Wilyer Abreu, Justin Slaten, Rob Refsnyder; could return this week

The Boston Red Sox have been on a roll recently, winning three straight against their eternal rivals, the New York Yankees. While some cracks have begun to show in their roster, they have received some relieving news.

According to Masslive’s Sox Insider, Chris Cotillo, the Sox have three stars who will be returning very soon: Wilyer Abreu, Justin Slaten, and Rob Refsnyder.

“Rob Refsnyder (oblique), Wilyer Abreu (calf) and Justin Slaten (shoulder/neck) are all trending toward returning in the coming days, manager Alex Cora said Sunday. Refsnyder, who has been out since August 15, can come back as soon as Monday and it seems he feels good enough to do so. Slaten made another rehab appearance in Worcester on Sunday and might not need another outing before being activated. Abreu, who was placed on the IL on Friday after battling calf tightness for a few days, is scheduled to run at Camden Yards on Monday, a significant step toward a return,” Cotillo wrote.

Abreu is the team’s home run leader with 22, and is a Gold Glove in right field, and is having another Gold Glove season this year. Getting him back will provide more outfield depth, great defense, and a power bat.

Slaten is probably one of the most anticipated returns for the Sox, as he has been a focal point of their bullpen for years. The pen has been showing cracks recently, and Slaten’s career 3.09 ERA will be a welcome patch.

Finally, Refsynder will provide even more outfield depth, and the ability to crush lefties. Putting him in the lineup allows for the Sox’s most powerful lefty-hitting lineup to be assembled, and they would have the ability to rock both throwing arms.

Hopefully they return ASAP, as the Sox have the top Wildcard spot, and they need to keep it.
