Red Sox make decision on Trevor Story position change as struggles continue

The Boston Red Sox are dealing with injuries, and their offense is simply not producing. Trevor Story has struggled immensely, but the team is not considering moving him off of shortstop to try and help their offense or cover for injuries.

First base has been a question mark since Triston Casas went down. Kristian Campbell is an option to play first base as he has been working out there. However, moving Story there would also make sense, allowing Marcelo Mayer to play shortstop. However, Manager Alex Cora has made it clear they will keep Story at shortstop.

“No. He’s a shortstop. Just gotta get him going offensively,” said Cora per WEEI’s Mike Monaco.

Story is in year four of a six-year, $140 million deal he signed with the Red Sox. He has struggled to stay healthy and has not played more than 94 games in a season since joining the Red Sox. This year, he is slashing just .217/.264/.319. With Alex Bregman out, Mayer has a spot at third base. However, when he returns, the Red Sox will have to make some sort of change to keep him in the lineup.

Campbell playing first base to keep Mayer in the lineup at second base is seemingly the most likely scenario for the team. However, if the Red Sox like Mayer as a shortstop, moving Story to first base would be the move to make.

Clearly, Mayer will not get to take over at shortstop this year. However, Story has an opt-out in his contract, and the Red Sox also have the option to buy him out. Story clearly has not met expectations for the team, and with Mayer now in the big leagues, he could take over at shortstop next year.
