The Boston Red Sox have had a very productive offseason. They traded for Garrett Crochet and signed Walker Buehler, Aroldis Chapman and Alex Bregman.
However, they may not be done just yet. Manager Alex Cora and team president Sam Kennedy have both alluded to the Red Sox having more moves potentially coming.
They could use a little bit of help in their bullpen. Right-hander Lance Lynn is drawing interest from several teams as a closer.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report lists Boston as the best possible landing spot for the former All-Star and World Series champion.
“What makes the Red Sox an interesting fit for Lynn is that they’re one of the only contenders in MLB that lacks a clear answer at closer,” Rymer said.
“Kenley Jansen was that guy in 2023 and 2024, but he’s in Anaheim now. The role is basically up for grabs, with Liam Hendriks, Aroldis Chapman and Justin Slaten among those vying for it this spring.
There’s no downside to throwing a wild card into the mix, least of all one with as much upside as Lynn.”
The 37-year-old went 7-4 with a 3.84 ERA in 23 starts with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2024. But perhaps transitioning to a new role could be good for him.
He made two trips to the injured list last season, but he has pitched in the bullpen before. When the Cardinals won the World Series in 2011, Lynn was a key member of the relief corps as a rookie.
The Red Sox don’t have a true closer entering the 2025 season. While they have plenty of options, they likely are going to have a bullpen by committee. Adding Lynn to the mix certainly wouldn’t hurt.
We’ll see where Lynn ends up signing as the offseason winds down.
