The Boston Red Sox are just 2 1/2 games out of a wild card spot in the American League. They could make some additions at the trade deadline to make a final push.
The Red Sox should be getting Alex Bregman and Masataka Yoshida back soon. However, neither solves their problem at first base. However, the team could swing a trade for Carlos Santana of the Cleveland Guardians. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tabbed him as a fit for the Red Sox.
“The Cleveland Guardians are expected to unload first baseman Carlos Santana by the end of the month, who could be a nice fit for the Boston Red Sox, while also potentially moving outfielder Lane Thomas and perhaps closer Emmanuel Clase,” wrote Nightengale.
Santana is in his 16th season as a big leaguer. He has a .239/.333/.368 slash line this season. While his numbers are not great, he would bring some stability to the position. He won a Gold Glove Award last season, is a switch hitter.
He would bring some veteran leadership to the Red Sox as they try to navigate their way into October. Santana has 10 home runs this year, but he has hit over 300 home runs in his career. He has a career OPS of .782 and is a former All-Star and Silver Slugger Award winner. Even if he is not in his prime anymore, he is a better option than the Red Sox’s current ones.

His career numbers at Fenway Park could also make him a great option. He has an .818 OPS in 41 games at Fenway Park. He has also hit eight home runs in Boston. Perhaps he could finally do some damage for the Red Sox instead of against.
