Well, the Boston Red Sox did it.
After Sunday’s series finale against the New York Yankees, the Red Sox traded away star third baseman/designated hitter Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a puzzling move.
Sure, Devers’ contract was a tough pill to swallow, and the drama with him moving from third base to DH was a storyline before the season began.
Still, Devers is a top-tier hitter in the league, and the Red Sox only received Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, OF James Tibbs III and Jose Bello, although the Giants picked up a large chunk of Devers’ deal.
Minutes after the trade report, Red Sox legend Jonathan Papelbon took to X to try and comfort the fans.
“Everyone calm down Devers isn’t getting traded!”
Less than 10 minutes later, he posted again, and X also hit him with a Community Note with an article to the trade details.
“Sorry I was wrong! Everyone go crazy Devers got got traded!”
The first post from Papelbon generated just under two million views as of Sunday night, and the second had already registered over 700,000.
It was quite the stunning turn of events for everybody involved. Devers was in the lineup in the 2-0 win on Sunday against the Yankees, and he even hit another home run to help earn the win.
Then, he was traded, and now he heads to the Bay Area where the Giants will host the Red Sox in a series on Friday in an unreal twist.
