Red Sox get positive news on All-Star hurler’s return from injury

The Boston Red Sox are about to get another All-Star caliber pitcher thrown into the rotation starting next week.

The Red Sox rotation is solid, with the top half comprised of ace Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler and Tanner Houck. With multiple pitchers injured, Boston has had to lean on players like Richard Fitts and Sean Newcomb to pitch.

While the Red Sox are happy with the return of Brayan Bello, the long-awaited return of All-Star hurler Lucas Giolito appears to be right on the horizon. Boston announced that Giolito will be making his team debut Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, as shared by MassLive’s Christopher Smith

“Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito’s stats on his rehab assignment aren’t good,” Smith said. “He has a 5.19 ERA in five starts combined between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. Giolito took the loss for the WooSox against Syracuse on Friday. He pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed three runs, three hits and six walks while striking out four…

“‘Obviously we saw the line but he’s healthy and he’s ready so the plan is for him to be with us in Toronto. Most likely Game 2 (Wednesday),’ manager Alex Cora said before the first game of Boston’s doubleheader against the Guardians on Saturday. Garrett Crochet will start Tuesday in Toronto and Giolito is expected to start Wednesday.”

Boston signed Giolito to a two-year, $38.5 million deal last offseason, according to Spotrac, but a Spring Training injury held him out of the 2024 season. Giolito has been working his way back from injury for over a year, and despite not having great stats in his rehab assignment, is a welcome addition to the Red Sox’s rotation.
