Red Sox could target All-Star lefty from Astros in free agency

The Boston Red Sox freed up a lot of money after trading All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.

The Giants took on Devers’ full contract, freeing up approximately $235 million to use elsewhere.

But how will the Red Sox use that money?

Boston is loaded with outfielders and infield prospects as it stands right now. They locked up Garrett Crochet, but the starting rotation hasn’t done much outside of Crochet’s efforts.

Walker Buehler and Lucas Giolito have been disappointing, but Hunter Dobbins and Brayan Bello have been solid.

FanSided’s BoSox Injection named 12 free agents the Red Sox could sign, including a two-time All-Star lefty to bolster the rotation.

Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez would be a great fit for the Red Sox if they decide to pursue the left-hander.

“If Boston is looking for a fellow ace to pair alongside Garrett Crochet, they’re not going to find one much better than Framber Valdez,” wrote Drew Koch. “All of the Houston Astros’ attempts to re-sign the southpaw have failed, and he’ll be looking to cash in this offseason. The price tag might be a bit high, but Valdez is one of the most consistent starters slated to hit free agency this winter.”

Valdez, 31, is 8-4 with a 3.09 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 15 starts this season. He is 11th in Major League Baseball with 99 strikeouts.

Adding Valdez would create a dominant lefty duo with Crochet, and even if the price tag is a little high, the Red Sox should be able to add more talent in the offseason.
