The Boston Red Sox made a shocking trade on Sunday when they sent Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison.
However, despite the trade, the Red Sox continue to play solid baseball and are even in possession of the third American League Wild Card spot. But with Devers’ money off the books, the Red Sox have a little financial flexibility.
They could trade for a high-dollar player at the deadline, or they could make a big splash in free agency this coming winter.
Drew Koch of BoSox Injection proposed the idea of signing Michael King.
“There will be some talented pitchers hitting free agency this coming winter, and Boston should keep an eye on Michael King. The former New York Yankees reliever has turned himself into a quality starter for the San Diego Padres, and with the Friars’ excessive payroll, they’re unlikely to retain his services,” Koch wrote.

The Red Sox need some help with their starting rotation, even after acquiring and extending Garrett Crochet. King could be somebody that gives them exactly what they need.
Unfortunately, King is on the injured list with a pinched nerve in his right shoulder and has been out for quite some time. However, if he doesn’t return to the Padres, he could be a perfect candidate to fill a hole with the Red Sox.
When healthy, he can be one of Major League Baseball’s top starting pitchers, and he is still off to a good start this season.
In 10 starts, King is 4-2 with a 2.59 ERA. He’s also averaging 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings, so he would bring some much-needed swing-and-miss to Boston’s rotation.
We’ll see what they decide to do in the offseason, but with Walker Buehler likely to hit free agency, King could be a perfect solution.
